Butter In Our Brew- Bulletproof Your Day
I constantly find myself scouring the internet looking for new research or ideas on exercise and nutrition, and recently I ran into a concoction on coffee called Bulletproof coffee. I was intrigued by the ingredient list: 2 cups fresh brewed coffee from organic beans, 1-2 tbsp grass fed butter, and 1-2 tbsp of either coconut oil or MCT oil. I also add a little cinnamon and a drop of vanilla extract to the mix. You put the fresh brewed coffee and the other ingredients in a blender or Magic Bullet, whip it up, and what you’re left with is a frothy cappuccino looking coffee drink chock-full of healthy fat, nutrients, and energy.
I know what you’re thinking: butter and coconut in my coffee sounds completely disgusting – but as many of the people that I’ve turned on to this drink can attest – it is quite tasty and gives you lots of energy for the entire morning. You might also be thinking that this drink sounds like a lot of calories, especially calories from fat. I would agree with you, and then ask you what your point is. Healthy fat is not only full of healthy vitamins, but it is the primary satiating factor in our diet. It keeps us full, out of the cookie jar, and provides long sustaining intervals of energy as opposed to the rising crash and fall energy mess of putting some type of carb in your mouth every hour. The medium chain fatty acids in the coconut oil will give you more immediate energy, and when that wanes, the longer chain fatty acids from the butter will be kicking in, allowing for a nice steady feeling of energy all morning.
A quick note: breast milk – nature’s perfect food – is 54% saturated fat, your brain and nerves are primarily constructed of materials containing saturated fat, and some of your major hormones like testosterone are derived from cholesterol. Logic tells me that if so many important structures in the body are made of saturated fat and cholesterol, then they probably aren’t the devil, but I digress. I’ll save my diatribe about saturated fat and cholesterol demonization for my next article.
So with Bulletproof coffee for breakfast, you’ll have a healthy, vitamin filled, energy dense drink first thing in the morning that will keep you humming along until lunch.
It’s not just a beverage… it’s an EVENT!
